Frequently Asked Questions

What is ABA therapy and how does it help children with autism?

ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) therapy is a science-based approach that helps children with autism learn communication, social, and daily living skills through positive reinforcement. It’s personalized to your child’s strengths and challenges, and research shows it’s one of the most effective therapies for autism. Sessions can happen at home, in school, or in our centers, wherever your child learns best.

If your child has been diagnosed with autism or is showing delays in communication, social interaction, or behavior management, ABA therapy can help. Many families notice their child struggles with communication, play skills, transitions, or tantrums: ABA targets these exact areas. You don’t need to wait for a formal diagnosis to reach out; we can guide you through the evaluation process. Start with our parent guide on early signs of autism.

The earlier, the better. Research shows that starting ABA between ages 2-6 leads to the strongest outcomes. At Ignite, we specialize in early intervention for children as young as 2, when their brains are most adaptable. That said, older children (ages 7-12) also benefit from ABA, especially for school readiness and social skills.

We serve ages 2-12 across Milwaukee, West Allis, Madison, Fox Valley, and Eau Claire.

Yes! Most insurance plans in Wisconsin, including Medicaid (BadgerCare/ForwardHealth), are required to cover ABA therapy for autism. We work with families to verify benefits, submit claims, and handle the paperwork so you can focus on your child. Private insurance plans like United Health Group, Optum, BlueCross Blue Shield, Anthem, Dean, and Quartz also typically cover ABA.

Not sure about your coverage?

Ignite accepts most major insurance plans in Wisconsin, including Medicaid (BadgerCare/ForwardHealth) and most commercial plans. Many of our families use Medicaid as their primary funding source, and we’re proud to serve families regardless of insurance type. Not sure if your plan is covered?

We’ll verify your benefits at no cost.

ABA sessions are play-based and tailored to your child’s interests, think building blocks, arts and crafts, or interactive games. A trained, BCBA-supervised therapist works one-on-one with your child to practice skills like asking for help, taking turns, or managing big emotions. Sessions happen multiple times a week, ranging from 15-40 hours per week, either at home or in our centers.

Want to see ABA in action?

Every child is different, but many families notice small improvements within the first few months like better communication, fewer tantrums, or following directions. Significant skill-building typically happens over 1-2 years of consistent therapy. The key is sticking with it: kids who receive 20+ hours per week of ABA show the most progress. We’ll track your child’s goals together every step of the way. Let’s talk about your child’s timeline.

Absolutely! ABA therapy is highly effective for building communication skills, whether your child is nonverbal, has limited speech, or struggles with conversational skills. We use techniques like modeling, prompting, and visual supports to help your child express their needs. At our Milwaukee location, we now offer integrated speech therapy services onsite, allowing for seamless collaboration between your child’s ABA and speech therapists.

Home-based ABA is great for teaching daily routines like getting dressed, eating meals, or playing with siblings, skills that happen naturally in your home environment. Center-based ABA offers more opportunities for group learning and peer interaction in a structured setting. At Ignite, we offer both options and can blend them based on what your child needs.

How does ABA therapy support students in the classroom?

School-based ABA helps students with autism succeed in the classroom by teaching skills like following directions, staying on task, and interacting with peers. Our BCBAs work directly with teachers and IEP teams to create behavior support plans that fit seamlessly into the school day. We focus on reducing disruptive behaviors and building independence so students can fully participate in learning.

Serving schools in Milwaukee, West Allis, Madison, Fox Valley, and Eau Claire. Partner with us.

Yes! Our BCBAs regularly attend IEP meetings and collaborate with special education teams to align therapy goals with your student’s educational plan. We can provide Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs), write Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs), and train staff on implementation. ABA services can be written into an IEP as a related service or provided through private insurance.

A behavior plan (BIP) outlines strategies for managing a student’s behavior, while ABA therapy is the hands-on, individualized intervention that teaches new skills and reduces challenging behaviors. Think of the BIP as the roadmap and ABA as the vehicle that gets you there. Our BCBAs can write the plan and provide direct therapy to make sure it actually works. How do I refer a patient for ABA therapy?

Referring is easy: families can contact us directly, or you can send a referral via phone or email with the family’s consent. We’ll handle insurance verification, coordinate any needed autism evaluations, and keep you updated on progress. Once insurance authorization is approved, most families begin services within 2 weeks of referral.

We partner with pediatricians across Wisconsin. Send a referral today.

ABA therapy is primarily for children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis, which is required for insurance coverage. However, children with related developmental delays, ADHD, or behavioral challenges may also benefit from ABA techniques. If you’re unsure whether a patient qualifies, we’re happy to consult. Serving Milwaukee, West Allis, Madison, Fox Valley, and Eau Claire. Contact us for eligibility questions.

ABA therapy works beautifully alongside speech (SLP) and occupational therapy (OT). While SLPs focus on articulation and language, and OTs target sensory and motor skills, ABA addresses the behavioral and learning foundations that make those therapies more effective. We regularly collaborate with other providers to ensure a cohesive treatment approach.
